Having worked under renowned Bach interpreters Gustav Leonhardt and Sir Neville Mariner, the Schola Cantorum utilizes their talents extremly well. Paired with the Northern Chamber Orch., these two organizations produce fine work. The strings play with an exact precision, yet without compromising the warmth of the writing. The groups of winds are flawless in the execution of their exposed parts, especially the trumpets. The choruses, especially the opening movement are brilliantly performed with both flair and compassion, as is typical with Bach's choral writing. there is an excellent balance between the independent contrapuntal structure and the self-contained homophony. This recording is an excellent testament to both Bach's genius and the glory of God.
The solo cantata also included on this disk is also well performed. Gedge very well captures the passion embodied within both the text and the music. |
