Suite No. 5 in C Minor, BWV 1011
Suite No. 6 in D Major, BWV 1012 | | Format: | Compact Disc | | Record Label: | RCA | | Catalog Number: | RD70950 | | Year Released/Recorded: | 1976 | | Total Playing Time: | approx. 126 mins. | | Comments: | Bylsma's earlier recording of the set. Indicates a more classical approach to the works, distinguished by the quieter and austerer sound of a typical Baroque cello (Matthio Goffrileri, Venezio 1699) as compared to his recent Sony recordings, using a large Starivarius instrument. Still very valuable for those who admire his playing.

I know it's dangerous to describe this in human terms, but Bylsma's playing here has a far more human tone than he does with his later recording on Sony. The cello seems to sing here, although occasionally the woody sounds like a throat clearing. The tempi are also far preferable. The prelude to #6 has verve; the bourre to #4 is something you would share with all your friends. | | Acknowledgements: | Thank you to the following for submitting this recording and for your comments:- (Mr.) Fang-lin Hou
