This is a gem!
Sonny is re-issuing recordings from the Early Music label Seon, founded by Wolf Erichson and covering the period of 1970-80, and judging by this splendid CD the effort is most welcome.
Two exquisite, emotional, solo bass cantatas from Leipzig years, performed by Early Music pioneers: Baritone Max van Egmond sings effortlessly, with a beautifull and warm voice, while conductor Frans Bruggen directs a small ensemble with original instruments. The instrumental sound is just a bit too "thin" - there are better results with later day performances, but it is still very nice.
Boys trebles and contraltos from Koorschool St.Bavo, Harlem plus two each tenors and basses join for the final choral of 56.
Playing time of under 40 minutes is really meagre for a CD, but it is sold on budget price, and the beautifull music makes up for the short duration. ADD recording, but a very successfull remastering makes recorded sound as good as new. |
