Review by Jan Hanford:
A nice performance of the Lute Suites on guitar. Admired by students of guitar, John Williams was a student of the legendary Andres Segovia.
I do think this cd is very good. My only real complaints about this recording of the Bach suites are that the Columbia sound is slightly muffled, not crisp enough, and the performance is a bit too controlled. But given that I'm told other musicians take too many liberties with the music, I do find John Williams' sticking to the score a big plus. It really is a lovely cd and I don't think anyone would be disappointed by it.
Also, I'm told this recording has be re-released on Sony's budget label "Essential Classics" with the addition of the remainder of Bach's lute music which were included on the original vinyl release of this recording and that the sound is crisper. That sounds like the one to get!
