Vol. 3 in a super-budget 5-disc box set from Laserlight called Bach: Meisterwerke. As with the other discs in the box, this one also is full of wonderful, clear, and delightful playing of some of Bach's most tuneful works. Especially pleasurable are the concertos 1060 & 1063. I heard this disc before I ever heard these works played with harpsichord soloists instead of violins and oboes, and I have to say I prefer them this way. The Alla Siciliana in 1063 on violins rather than harpsichords is played so beautifully and plaintively it rivals the famous Air from the 3rd Orchestral Suite on the same disc.
According to the New Grove Bach Family, these are Bach's "original" versions before he reworked them into harpsichord concertos, which appeals to this fan of "authenticity". Thankfully, there is also a good amount of historical background included in the cd booklet, as well as information about the works themselves (although, regrettably, nothing about the performers.) Recommended, especially at this incredibly inexpensive budget price. | | Acknowledgements: | Thank you to the following for submitting this recording and for your comments: | | Date First Submitted: | 04/12/1998 | | Purchasing: | Suggested Purchasing Sources
